Small Talk: Why the future looks good from here
Alex Hillman
Happy Friday!
We started this week looking backward, and we’re ending it looking forward. Both literally and figuratively.
Here are 5 quick things to end the week that we think are worth a high five. 🙌
1. The Kids Are Alright - Inspiration from FamFrequency
We recently hosted FamFrequency’s latest graduating class of young music entrepreneurs and honestly, I’m still feeling inspired.
These young people are all VERY musically talented, but more than that, we got to hear a number of them speak with clarity about the world they’re stepping into and their priorities balance their ambition with their ethics. I freakin’ love that and want everything good for them.
Some of the adults running the world today could learn a thing or two, but the future’s in good hands.
2. Can we talk about Pluribus?
A bunch of us can’t stop talking about the new sci-fi show Pluribus, on Apple TV, from the creator of Breaking Bad. It’s weird and smart and the message about human connection (or a lack thereof) feels on brand for Indy Hall.
No spoilers here, but if you’re watching too, this feels like a show we want to keep talking about. And if you love sci-fi that makes you think, or you loved Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, go in with as little info as possible!
3. Need a second screen in your workday? We got you!
Over time, we’ve added big external monitors to most of our drop-in workstations, making it easy for members and guests alike to enjoy coworking away from the big-screen comfort of your home workstations without giving up the extra pixels.
In the last few weeks we’ve added even more monitors, thanks to generous donations from Lou H, Graham B, and Scott W. Thanks guys!
4. “Bad Art for Good” proves that advocacy can be cute
Sarah Mack’s “Bad Art for Good” series invited people with any level of art skills to hang out and doodle about the causes they care about. Check out this thread on Bluesky to see what else folks made, and stay tuned for their next free event in January!

5. Navigating Healthcare Access Together
This month is “Open Enrollment” for the marketplace health insurance plans, and the plans are worse/more expensive than ever.
That’s not the part we’re high fiving, of course. That sucks.
But if you’re self-employed & confused or frustrated with rising healthcare costs, we’re coming together (online and in person) for a free lunchtime info session next week to hopefully share some fresh ideas for how to navigate these rising costs.
Importantly, this will NOT be a sales session. This is just me (Alex) sharing what I’ve learned from years of research about ways to access healthcare that keep costs down and improve care quality. This approach won’t work for everyone, but we hope it’ll give you some new options to consider to keep you and your family healthy!
